Always in demand for masterclasses, recitals and concerts worldwide, he has also found the time in his hectic schedule to have edited and published more than 25 books of flute music. Monday Mar 30, 2020
Monday Mar 30, 2020
Life as a flute player inside the Paris lockdown
In 'Talking Flutes Extra' this week, Jean-Paul speaks via Messenger app from his own London Covid-19 'Lockdown' to Paris based musician and flute professor Mihi Kim about how she has survived and worked through the first two weeks of hers in Paris.
During the podcast Mihi gives some really interesting tips about how to practice silently if you’re lockdown in a small apartment and also what she is doing to keep herself motivated.
As a flute professor in Paris, Mihi is very firm in her belief of what makes a good flute teacher. They only goals should be to unleash the potential of the flute student. The student should not be playing to please the teacher. The key is understanding how a student thinks and what is blocking them from doing certain things. Do not try to be like teacher or another player you admire as you will never achieve your goal. Try to be only like yourself!

The importance of trusting your own musical judgement!
In this week's 'Talking Flutes Extra' Jean-Paul dials in to Paris to speak with popular social media flutist and performance boundary pusher Daniela Mars. In a wide raging talk, she explains how you should trust your own judgement when putting performance videos up online as to ask too many others often leads to conflicting advise and inner confusion. Also how she always wanted to push boundaries with her practice and performances and got very confused when she was studying, with the conflicting advice from players and teachers on how to play Bach and Mozart. "Every piece of music I had, would have previous performance comments (by teachers) rubbed out and replaced with a different preference...so confusing!! Daniela also speaks about her conflict in playing Ian Clarke's 'Zoom Tube' in a morph suit on YouTube and whether to show her face at all during the piece.
Next week Clare returns with her 'Talking Flutes' podcast where she is once again in dialogue with Jean-Paul answering listeners questions.

68. Exploring the Suite Antique by John Rutter - Clare Southworth
Monday May 13, 2019
Monday May 13, 2019
Two movements, the 'Rondeau' and the 'Aria' from the beautiful and haunting flute piece Suite Antique by John Rutter is this week looked at by Clare Southworth in her 'Talking Flutes' podcast
Composed in 1979, this concertante work by John Rutter is written for harpsichord, flute and string orchestra. Rutter composed the piece, in six movements, for a concert at which Bach's fifth Brandenburg concerto was to be performed, and so decided to write the piece for the same ensemble. The Suite is made up of six movements ranging from `a Bach-like Aria' to a 'Richard Rodgers-style Waltz'. Rutter's own style comes forth most strongly in the final Rondeau with its characteristically forward-driving rhythms and beautiful melodic lines. Evoking an 'antique' spirit, each movement is based on a Baroque or Classical style.

61. Articulation for the flute player - Clare Southworth
Monday Mar 25, 2019
Monday Mar 25, 2019
Tonguing and articulation is such a large and fundamental subject to flute playing that 'Talking Flutes' host and Professor of flute at the Royal Academy of Music in London Clare Southworth was originally unwilling to record a podcast on such a complex area.
With so many variables depending on the piece, what the performer is wanting to emphasise, speed vs clarity, notational length etc Clare's reluctance was based around what can be put across in a podcast of acceptable length. This is where your emails come in. So many of you have requested information and guidance on this subject that Clare has relented and has recorded this brief look on the complexity that is articulation.

Monday Mar 11, 2019
Monday Mar 11, 2019
Psychiatrist Dr Roelof Joe Stammeijer has a coffee and a chat with his mum, Flute professor, soloist, author and rather fine golfer Clare Southworth-Stammeijer on the subject of stress and mental health for the musician. As the surname suggests, Dr Stammeijer is Clare's son, and also was a flute player himself so is fully aware of the day-to-day inner struggles that musicians face.
As Clare says at the end of the podcast, never suffer in silence. Everybody has good days and days when they do not feel as good. This is natural, however if you find the regularity of the low days increasing, and you are beginning to feel extremely low, then if you can't emerge from the clouds, seek help from your local doctor. Thankfully in 2019, it is not a sign of weakness to accept that at times we are stressed, extremely low and may have some deep inner issues. It's a sign of weakness when you don't seek help!

Not only is this a fabulous piece, but Hamilton Hardy lived and worked in the beautiful English town of 'Hove' in East Sussex, the same place where Clare now 'lives'.
Sir Herbert Hamilton Harty (4 December 1879 – 19 February 1941) was an Irish composer, conductor, pianist and organist.
After an early career as a church organist in his native Ireland, Harty moved to London at about age 20, soon becoming a well-known piano accompanist. The Musical Times called him "the prince of accompanists". As a composer he wrote throughout his career, many of his works being well received, though few are regularly performed in the 21st century.
In his career as a conductor, which began in 1904, Harty was particularly noted as an interpreter of the music of Berlioz. From 1920 to 1933 he was the chief conductor of the in Halle orchestra in Manchester, which he returned to the high standards and critical acclaim that it had enjoyed under its founder, Charle Halle. His last permanent post was with the London Symphony Orchestra but it lasted only two years, from 1932 to 1934. During his conducting career, Harty made some recordings with his orchestras but began to suffer the symptoms of a brain tumour. After surgery, he resumed his career until 1940, but the tumour returned to cause his death at the age of 61.
